I want to start this newsletters lifespan by sharing too much, much more than you could possibly want. In this series I will be calling “More.,” I will be offering up some of my favorite videos, articles, books, ideas, you-name-its that I have recently discovered.
I absolutely love when writers give me a peek into a world I would never have been able to find otherwise, simply by saying “hey, I love this and you might too.” I offer this gesture of love to you all as well –– optimistic that at least one of these offerings could be a rabbit hole you find worth exploring. Since we are newly aquatinted, this first addition of More. will include some of my all-time favorites! Here we go :)
After the Movie by Marie Howe:
This poem made me realize I have no idea what love is. It is also a tornado so be on high alert.
How President Trump Ruined Political Comedy by Dan Brooks:
Not to be hyperbolic… but this is the most underrated New York Times article of all time. The fact that no one sent this to me, no one I know has read it, and I had to stumble across it while doing a research project for school is an absolute shame. Please help me rectify this injustice.
Kara Walker’s piece titled “Self Portrait”:
Does anyone have the right to sex? by Amia Srinivasan:
When was the last time you interrogated you own desires? For me, it was the last time I read this piece. Along with every time before.
Dear Sugar: The Ghost Ship That Didn't Carry Us by Sugar:
One of the most honest pieces I have ever read. I found this at a time when I was really contemplating whether or not I wanted to birth or raise children. It made me feel less alone and safe in my fears.
Ted Lasso S02E01 "Don't You Dare Settle For Less":
I gasped the first time I saw this scene because at the time it was exactly what I needed to hear. I rewatch this clip more than I would like to admit (especially if a dating app is present on my phone).
Mayor Pete Flew Sky High by Frank Bruni:
I include this article in part because it is random as all get out. Isn’t it so fun to go back into a period of time and read the news again with the knowledge of what’s to come? In all honestly though, I hang onto this piece because of a statement Buttigieg made during his concession which has been a North Star for me at times: “Politics at its worst is ugly. But at its best, politics can lift us up. It is not just policymaking. It is moral. It is soul craft.”
Sticky Toffee Pudding Cake Recipe by Mel’s Kitchen Cafe
Deliciousness at its finest!! Truly spectacular. I’m allergic to nuts so I do it without the nuts and it is still splendid.
This was a quarantine find that I still jump over to when I really need a breath of fresh air from my computer, but I for-whatever-reason must remain on my computer.
It's Your Friends Who Break Your Heart by Jennifer Senior
Friendship above all else! Senior explains friendship in a better way than most and sums up many of my fears and hopes for the future on this topic.
The movie It Happened One Night:
I have recently been on a mission to learn the history of the rom-com, and this movie is considered the first rom-com of all time. It is critically acclaimed and if that doesn’t mean anything to you, it is also acclaimed by me!
That feels like more than enough for now. I hope that this email finds you well and leaves you better <3
